Federation Egg Race!

On Friday 18th March, Harris Academy Beckenham proudly hosted the annual Federation Egg Race Challenge

Year 7 students from various Harris Academies in the region were warmly welcomed to take part in the exciting but challenging contest; to design and construct a bridge out of lollypop sticks and string!

Each academy sent a representative team of three year 7 students to do their academy proud. From Harris academy Beckenham were three extremely promising students;  Katrine Reoutov, Shaydon McKenzie and Daniel Kreb-Loveridge.

Following an introduction by a lead Science consultant from the Federation, students were given the resources and expected to construct a bridge from the supplied materials.

It was clearly a challenge from the outset, with puzzled faces clearly evident as the resources were handed out!

However, the teams certainly did not shy away from the challenge presented to them. Lollipop sticks and string surrounding the students as they worked, it was clear we had some budding engineers hard at work!

Harris Academy put up a credible fight, and constructed a bridge that was certainly capable of supporting additional weight; however time was against the team and unfortunately did not allow for full completion.

The winning effort came from Harris Academy Morden, with a bridge that supported an impressive 1.5kgs! They thoroughly deserved to be crowned champions with their construction, however congratulations to all teams for the great deal of enthusiasm they brought to the successful afternoon.

‘It’s a shame we didn’t win, but I really enjoyed the challenge!’

‘One of the best days at school yet!’
