Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Expedition
Congratulations to the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students who successfully passed their Qualifying Expedition on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th June 2018. Students had been preparing for this expedition for a number of months, and having learnt valuable lessons from their Practice Expedition, they were ready to navigate themselves in the Kent Downs.
They consistently demonstrated resourcefulness in their approach to ensuring they arrived at each checkpoint on their route despite some groups rerouting. When the students arrived at Dunn Street Farm campsite, they were quick to set up their tents and cook their dinner. A variety of food was made, however pasta was a firm favourite among the majority. The evening was spent enjoying the long summer night with the girls opting for a chilled out chat snuggled in their sleeping bags, while the boys played a competitive game of ‘clap and catch’. One particular student said “this is the most fun I’ve had in ages”. Students set their alarms for Saturday morning and a handful even woke to watch the sun rise over the rolling hills of the beautiful Kent Downs.
Day two was equally as successful, with students reaching each checkpoint and working cohesively as a team to work towards completing their expedition aim. Aims ranged from photographing the flora and fauna to vlogging the change in emotions throughout the expedition.
The expedition assessor said “the students were a credit to Harris Beckenham and it was great to see them all working together over the two days”. Congratulations once again and I look forward to welcoming all students onto their Silver Duke of Edinburgh next year.
