German Open Competition 2nd - 4th July 2016
On Saturday 2nd of July, my mum and I had an early flight to Munich, Germany. We left the UK at 9:00am and arrived at Munich airport at 11:00am (the time over there is 1hour head). On this day, some Great Britain players were already competing when we were arriving at our hotel. For the rest of the day we decided to relax and explore our surroundings. Our town that we stayed in was small and seemed deserted as there were hardly any cars to be seen. After this exploration, we went to an Italian restaurant and had an early night for a busy, tiring day the next day.
Competition day had arrived and we woke up early to have a filling breakfast and wait for our taxi to the venue. After a peaceful journey to the venue, we met up with the rest of the Great Britain team. After changing into our uniforms, we all had a team meeting to help relax and calm down the competitors. An hour later, the timings for the day were finalised and I found out that my category was on at 11:00am. As this category was too big, 34 players, it was split onto 2 different mats. On one of the mats, I realized I was first on and so decided to get in some more practise time. Before I knew it, I was on and I performed as well as I could. I checked my points after and I thought it was a good score to get me through to the semis. After all the players had competed, I checked the list to see who got through and my prediction was correct and I got through. We had a couple of minutes to rest and practise a bit more and I did so. I was on 17th out of 19 and I felt nervous. My turn arrived and I tried my best once more, however it was not good enough to get me through to the final. The Europeans had beaten me once again. I checked the list afterwards to see my overall position and I was glad to see I wasn’t 19/34, I was actually 12/34. This made me feel better to know that I came 12th out of some of Europe’s best players. For the rest of the day, I just watched all the other British players perform. After it was all over, it turned out to be 4:00pm which was a shock as most competitions end at roughly 6 or 7 o’clock at night. After this day, my mum and I said our goodbyes to the rest of the British players and left for the taxi back to the hotel.
The next day, my mum and I woke up to be ready for the flight back home at 2:00pm. We ate our breakfast then relaxed more until it was 11:00 which was our time to leave the hotel and reach the airport for a calm flight back home. At 5 o’clock, we arrived back to our house and felt good to be back in our known area which didn’t feel deserted. Overall, the competition was a good experience to know how the rest of Europe is doing in comparison to the British team.
