25 November 2022Message from our Head Girl and Head BoyHere's a message from James and Olivia, the Head Boy and Head Girl here at Harris Academy Beckenham. Find out more about Student Voice at HABE. Hello there, everyone! We are James and Olivia, the Head Boy and Head Girl here at Harris Academy Beckenham! Both of us have been students at HABE since Year 7, and so we have seen first-hand the growth of HABE throughout the years. As Sixth Form students now, it feels both scary and exciting to be completing our A-Levels and advancing into our future after HABE! However, we are incredibly grateful for the staff here at our school, for their passion and drive towards helping us achieve our full potential. Since we have been here for so long, we understand some of the troubles that our younger students can face, whether it be stress from homework, schoolwork, exams or other circumstances. In the aftermath of the pandemic, it can still be quite hard for some students to adjust to normal school life and adapt to new forms of learning. As a result, we are both very focused on giving a voice to these students, both through our positions as senior members of the Student Leadership Group (which helps to make improvements in different parts of our school). Recently, we have been focusing on subjects such as bullying and mental health, as well as deciding on which charity we should choose in light of the upcoming Christmas Break, which can be a very stressful time for many, especially given the country’s circumstances at this time. We want to be figures that students can approach with any problem, from worries about their mental health to even struggles with a particular subject they are studying. We would be more than happy to listen to them! We aspire, as Head Boy and Head Girl, to ensure that every student at Harris Academy Beckenham has a comfortable and enjoyable learning experience, whether it be your first day of Year 7, or your last week in Year 13! We do hope you have a wonderful time at our school, and we are always here as someone to listen to – and be a voice – to your concerns. We hope you have a lovely and safe Christmas Break, and we’ll see you in the New Year! James and Olivia :)
25 June 2019Girls Football Making History! This year is the first time the girls football cup was to be played in the same format as the boys. This, as well as the Women’s World Cup having excellent media coverage, made the girls even more excited to be a part of history in the making. After winning their leagues unbeaten, both our U12 and U13 girls football teams made it through to the Harris Federation Cup Finals.  As the finals day approached, nerves and tension began to build. This was the first time some of the team had ever played in a final, let alone at a proper stadium.  U12’s The U12’s had most of the early possession having many chances on goal with captain Leiona controlling the forward line and putting pressure on the Bermondsey defence. Solid defending from Bella, Daisy and Maisie made it extremely difficult for Bermondsey to convert any of their chances. As the first half drew to a close it was still 0-0.  Bermondsey came out with determination in the second half but were still unable to break down the midfield and defence. Isobel on the left combined with Idana and Bryony in the centre ran rings around the Bermondsey defence yet were still unable to get on the scoresheet.  With only 1 minute left of injury time Bryony crossed the ball into the box to find Idana in a perfect position who slotted it in between the goal keepers legs. Final score 1-0 Harris Academy Beckenham.  U13’s A very different start to the U13 game as Bermondsey this time gained early possession and looked more threatening going forward with long route one passes through to their striker who was unfortunate not to convert. Daniela managed to stop several counter attacks with superb goal keeping.  Bermondsey continued their attack through the middle and it wasn’t long before they slotted one past Daniela. 1-0 Bermondsey.  Jodi controlled her team well and lead by example keeping a cool and calm composure under pressure. The Beckenham defence were  now under extreme pressure by a strong Bermondsey attack. Jelena alongside Scarlett and Kyanna were resilient in their attempts at preventing another goal however unfortunately Bermondsey finished the first half 2-0 up.  At half time, the girls were determined not to give in and went out fighting in the second half. Every loose ball and every 50/50 challenge was a Beckenham ball.  Skilful play led from the back by Emily, through the midfield to Olivia and then finally to Martha who took one touch around a defender and rocketed the ball into the top right corner from outside the box to take the score to 2-1. This was the start of Beckenham’s come back.  For the next 10 minutes, the game settled down with chances either end but neither side looking particularly threatening. However yet again, 1 minute before the final whistle, Ailis spotted the keeper of her line and from her own half lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. 2-2. Final whistle.  Extra time - Beckenham had found their second wind and controlled the game from the back. They passed the ball with composure and played a tactical game, playing the opposition off side and working together cohesively. The second half of extra time came and it was evident that both sides were starting to tire. This meant that Beckenham could implement their game plan and overload the Bermondsey attack. With the athleticism of Bryony and Emily, the Bermondsey defence were now under pressure and gave away a late corner. Using her left foot, Jess whipped in the ball and after a bit of confusion from the Bermondsey keeper, the ball was in the back of the net. 3-2 Beckenham!  Harris Beckenham’s U12 and U13 Girls Football teams bringing home the gold and being crowned Harris Federation Champions 2019.  Y8 Team Y7 Team Ms Carter - PE
