Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
Questions bounced back and forth on the journey there, trying to guess and imagine what such an experience would entail. All reservations and hypothetical situations immediately dissolved once we were shown to our seats. The walls of the winding corridor which would lead us to our section of the audience were lined with black and white pictures, all telling tales of past enchanting performances that would have bellowed through the walls on which they were hung. All four students and teacher gasped as they entered the auditorium. Deep red, glistening gold and a steep drop met them. What a magnificent setting for such an experience to follow!
The first performer entered the stage and his voice reverberated above the roaring orchestra beneath him. Luckily for the whole party, subtitles guided us through each scene with each performer’s individual voice conveying the emotions of the harrowing love triangle. Tormenting scenes of spirits followed, captivating the entire Opera House as the haunting tones of the performers spiralled up to where we were sat. Comical scenes were a welcome break to the tension with more uplifting and joyful symphonies which accompanied them. At the end of the show, applause was extended for over 15 minutes. The students were in awe of their experience and all boasted of their understanding of the story, each eagerly trying to explain their favourite part. It was a fantastic experience for all and one that won’t be forgotten soon.
